And most operators assume it doesn’t matter much. It does. And the difference can be 3–10% recovery. Here’s why: the dosing point determines three critical factors: 🔄 Dispersion efficiency 🧲 Adsorption conditions ⏱️ Reaction time Just a few meters along the process flow can completely change all three. Generally, the dosing point for modifiers is prioritized over that of collectors and frothers. Since pH establishes the fundamental environment for flotation, modifiers are usually added first to set the proper conditions before collectors and frothers are introduced at the appropriate locations. This article discusses the characteristics of different dosing points for collectors. Adding at Conditioning Tank: ✅ Best for: Minerals with fresh, unoxidized surfaces (higher activity → stronger adsorption) Ore types that are hard-to-float Situations where extended contact time (5–15 min) matters ✅ Extra benefit: Grinding media provides natural, uniform dispersion—no extra mixing needed. Adding Directly to Cells: ✅ Best for: Pulp already adjusted to optimal pH Stage addition strategies (bulk in roughing, top-up in scavenging) ✅ Extra benefit: Lower total reagent consumption. Real-world example: In copper ore flotation, shifting xanthate addition from the cells back to the mill discharge increased copper recovery by 2.5%—with zero change in reagent type or dosage. So how do you decide? For oxidized ores, finely disseminated sulfide ores, or material finer than 200 mesh → conditioning tank is usually your answer. But the real key is this: your lab flotation time tests are the foundation. Get that right, and your industrial process design follows. 👉Do you currently add your collectors upstream or directly to the cells? 👉 And which ore type do you process most—sulfide, oxide, or complex?

The government-backed mining vessel Chikyu recovered about 50 tonnes of mud during a month-long mission completed in February near Minamitori Island, about 1,900 km southeast of Tokyo. The expedition marked the world’s first successful continuous recovery of rare earth-bearing seabed mud from a depth of about 6 km. “The trial is expected to verify the feasibility of domestic rare earth production,” Kazushige Kikuchi, project manager at the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, told Reuters. A comprehensive assessment of the project’s commercial potential is due by March 2028. Cut China reliance The project could help Japan reduce its dependence on China for strategic minerals used in defence equipment, electric vehicles and advanced technologies. Beijing imposed export controls on some heavy rare earths and related magnets in April 2025 before tightening restrictions on shipments to Japan in January and twice more the following month. Japan’s government did not disclose the size of the rare earth deposit or the concentration of material in the recovered mud. Officials said the limited duration and geographic scope of the sampling program provided insufficient data for a broader resource estimate. Analysis identified yttrium, used in aerospace, energy and semiconductor applications; gadolinium, used in magnetic resonance imaging and other high-tech products; and dysprosium, an essential component in high-performance magnets for electric vehicles. In 2024, researchers from the University of Tokyo and the Nippon Foundation had already identified over 200 million tonnes of manganese nodules rich in battery metals in the Pacific Ocean, highlighting vast resource potential at depths around 5,500 meters. A separate survey by the University of Tokyo and the Nippon Foundation estimated the seabed nodules contain approximately 610,000 tonnes of cobalt—enough for 75 years of Japan’s consumption—and 740,000 tonnes of nickel, covering 11 years of domestic demand. Commercial test Japan plans a new month-long mining trial in the same waters beginning in February 2027, targeting production of 350 tonnes of mud a day. The material will be dewatered on Minamitori Island, about 1,900 km southeast of Tokyo, before being shipped to the mainland for separation, refining and smelting tests. The pilot program is designed to determine whether the offshore resource can support commercial rare earth production and reduce Japan’s dependence on imported supplies. source:https://www.mining.com/japan-finds-heavy-rare-earths-dominate-seabed-deposit/

The report released by the US Geological Survey (USGS) estimates there are 4.2 billion short tons of reported coal reserves associated with active mines and another 356 billion short tons of available coal resources on federally managed lands. In 2024, 34 coal mines on federal lands produced more than 261 million short tons, according to the USGS. Wyoming accounts for 14 of those mines and holds 87% of reported reserves associated with active federal mines, with the North Antelope Rochelle mine in the Powder River Basin identified as the world’s largest coal mine by reported reserves. “American Energy Dominance is more important than ever, and so is beautiful clean coal’s role in the production of electricity needed to fuel our future prosperity,” Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said in a statement. “Thanks to the USGS’s rigorous and independent assessment, we’re better equipped to manage America’s vast public lands responsibly while supporting energy security and economic opportunity.” The assessment supports President Donald Trump’s efforts to revive the coal sector. Trump signed Executive Order 14261 directing the review of coal resources beneath federal lands, while Burgum added metallurgical coal to the 2025 List of Critical Minerals. The report also calls for additional geological mapping in Alaska, where the USGS estimates at least 140 billion short tons of coal resources, but says the state could contain as much as 5.5 trillion short tons. Policy divide Twenty-nine of the active federal mines produce thermal coal for electricity generation, three Alabama operations produce metallurgical coal for steelmaking, one Colorado mine supplies the cement industry and one Utah mine remains idled. Federal lands covered by the study are administered by the Departments of Agriculture, Defense, Energy and Interior, along with the Tennessee Valley Authority. The report arrives as the Trump administration has committed more than $1 billion to bolster the US coal industry, including funding to extend the operating lives of coal-fired power plants and expand coal production capacity. The policy marks a sharp departure from climate scientists, who continue to argue that reducing coal, oil and gas consumption is essential to limiting global warming and avoiding more severe climate impacts. source:https://www.mining.com/us-estimates-federal-coal-could-power-nation-for-600-years/
